Just a Rock

Following upon Orlando's interest in fire and the elements, the boys and I went to Rock Club for the first time. We sat in a room in metal folding chairs, and looked at, picked up, and pondered rocks.

The group was small but I don't know why I was surprised to run into three other homeschooling families (whom we already vaguely knew). That was nice.

It was also nice that everyone there was so inclusive of the "juniors." They devote a half hour before the official meeting for the juniors and they have about a half dozen door prizes given out during the meeting, and each kid gets to pick their favorite rock, at the end of the meeting, from a pile of tumbled stones brought in by a nice guy named Tim.

Orlando is already planning for the next meeting (a month away)... I am sure the cookies and juice helped. But also the tussling and playing outside with friends. And mostly the lovely new rock he and Mica each clasped in their hands the whole way home.

Before we left they asked Tim what kind of rock they had, and once we were home I looked for answers to the questions they were asking me and stumbled upon the esoteric.

Here is something of what they chose for themselves:

Variscite (Orlando)
Helps with remembrance of past lives. Balances central nervous system and eases depression, fear, worry, anxiety and impatience. A good meditation stone. Also helps with virtue, self-reliance, moral courage and success. Works on astral and etheric level for healing via the nervous system (Central Nervous System) and at DNA level. Centers the Solar Plexus and heart Chakras and is slightly helpful for intuition center.

Agate (Mica)
Agate is believed to discern truth, accept circumstances, and is a powerful emotional healer. Legend says that Agate improves memory and concentration, increases stamina and encourages honesty. Agate is said to be particularly beneficial to people born under the sign of Gemini as it helps them to remain calm and focused.

It is believed to prevent insomnia and insure pleasant dreams, to enhance personal courage and protect one against danger. Agate provides a calming influence, improves perception, concentration and helps to develop and increase one's analytical talents.

I chose a plain old, perfectly round pebble from the beach. I didn't ask Tim what kind of stone it was. I think I will next time.

  4. Stacy,
We have a gem and mineral club just a few blocks from our house with a very kid-friendly policy. In fact, I think they are trying to recruit the next generation of rock geeks. Col is enthralled with rocks, has an expanding rock collection and scours the earth with his eyes looking for new cool rocks.
Being a gemini, I might need some agate.
Col likes your beach pebble best, "because it's so round."

  5. Stacy, How wonderful, the energies of the stones they picked. I just recently have been exploring this myself -stones, crystals etc. that help with different energies, including diffusing electro-magnetic pollution. I guess it's official, I have gone completely new age!

I loved your rock because it is so clean and simple.

Have been following your posts in my reader, but haven't commented anywhere in ahile, just felt the urge today. Have enjoyed hearing about your new community and how you have settled in. Hope you are well- Lisa

  6. I honestly never thought to look up the "meanings" behind the rocks...funny since I try to find meaning in about everything else in life!! I must say that I am impressed with your rock labeling in your following post!! Glad you guys found a new hobby to discover!! You'll have to come see our science museum on our front porch sometime!! Maybe you can even help us label everything!! Must start working on our display ideas...
