Fairies + Beaches = Perfect

Today Orlando offered Mica an apple, which Mica dropped, and I yelped about the kids "ruining the fruit!"

Sigh.

Sometimes I need to remember that an apple is a gift and that Mica's hands are small.

Sometimes I need a great, big reminder that kids are kids, and that they live in a slightly different dimension. That the whirling mass of limbs and noise below me as a I cook breakfast is my son living out his fantasy (he's Godzilla, don'tcha know?), not some terrible message sent to annoy me.

Sometimes I need to remember that Orlando is not quite five and that he is learning about his body and the world. And that I, at thirty-eight, still don't exhibit self-control in certain situations.

Sometimes I need to remember that Orlando — this sweet, new person — has good intentions. And that he was giving a gift — a sweet, ripe apple — to his little brother. And that he is giving us all gifts, one boisterous, dear, fantastic moment at a time.

Sometimes I need to lighten up and listen to my children.

Which is why I am awarding Patti at 37 Days with June's Perfect Post award.

Go read about fairies and beaches. It'll do you good.

  1. How is it that it is so difficult to have expectations that fit the magical little munchkins of our lives?? I really love this post. Really. Listen to our kids.

    Revolutionary.

    Thanks mama-om.

  2. Thank you so much for this post! I think we ALL need to remember these things sometimes. And I know your words will be with me tomorrow as I go through my day, helping me to see things from a much different perspective! And to find joyful appreciation in what might otherwise be an annoyance :) Really great post!

  3. This is a great post, and I really appreciate the reminder. It's so nice to take a deep breath and think about intentions -- which, for little ones, are not always the same as outcomes, but which are terribly important.

It's been great having you at my place recently, by the way. Looking forward to getting to know you better...
