Nothing Wrong with Letters. As Long As They're Numbers.

A friend gave us this binder where you can spell three-letter words. Orlando thought it was great, and spent quite a while picking out and spelling words.

I noticed that he soon had picked out all the number words. One, Two, Six, and Ten.

Then Mica joined in with this set of magnet letters we have, and guess who organized all the numbers?

Orlando. He likes numbers. :)

Though, to be fair, his latest engagement with letters is to go around the house and spell out all the writing he sees on packages, signs, book titles, etc.

We spent quite a bit of time at the pantry the other day with me writing down things like...

Boulder
tortilla chips
Eden
products
thai
beans

I thought it was an interesting exercise he devised for himself because in the process he was teaching himself about upper- and lowercase letters, letter identification, spelling, phonics, and more. I also got a little insight into how he is seeing and interacting with letters.

And that was a pretty yummy snack. :-)

  1. Awesome! hehehe... I love seeing Nyjah find little mini activities like this too. I needed this reminder to get her some more number manipulatives... Our puppy almost all of her wooden set... oops. Love to you mama...

  3. A mathematician with great verbal skills--I love it! When my son was learning to reading, he read everything. Not just books, but posters, cereal boxes and even street signs.
