Music Appreciation for Five Year Olds

The kids were in the back of the car, and we were heading off to Orlando's class with the classical radio station playing.

"Mama, can you please leave this music on?"

"Sure," I said, surprised by Orlando's politeness.

"I like this music!" He listened for a moment as the dramatic swells of the orchestra filled the car.

"I like this music because it sounds like it has monsters in it!"

Oh, to be a five-year-old boy.

  1. We just welcomed a cello into our world.

My kids have now made: creaking, rocking chair and other creepy sounds.

I bet we could pull a monster out of it too, if we put our minds to it.

  2. I am completely enamoured with the mosaic behind the orchestra in the photo. STUNNING.

  4. We had a brief flirtation with Suzuki piano lessons, and the best thing that came out of it was the totally awesome CD that we had to listen to 5 times a day (okay, not the whole thing, but sometimes it felt like it). The music is really accessible for the kids, and they still sometimes ask to listen to it.

  5. At least he has good taste. Better than rap. Not that you'd be listening to that in your car.

  6. "So not cool",

The "mosaic" behind the orchestra in the photo is, actually, the mural "Presencia de América Latina", a work created by Mexican artist Jorge González-Camarena in 1964-65. It's in University of Concepción, Chile.
