Heather Has Two Mommies (and Dave and Harold Have No Kids)

In the taxi on our way home from the airport, Orlando said to me, "How come Dave and Harold (our neighbors) don't have any kids?"

"Well," I said, "I guess they chose not to have any."

"Hm." He paused, "But where are the mamas?"

"Well, they don't have any mamas in their family."

He was more than satisfied with that answer, and took the opportunity to explain to me how it worked: "Because some mens want to have mamas and some mens don't. And sometimes it is two girls in the family."

"Yep, that's right," I said cheerfully.

I wonder what the taxi driver thought.

But considering we know Dave and Harold, who have no children...

And Miller, who has two papas (and two older sisters who live with their two mamas most of the time)...

And Nora and DJ, who were fostered and then adopted by their two mamas...

I suppose it makes sense that my kid is starting to do the math, exploring all the equations of love.

  3. And this is the magic of children. People are just people, and love is wonderful no matter who is sharing that love.

My daughter (6) is rather the champion of her friends who have two mamas or two papas in their houses. She stood up to a group of boy in grade 3 this past year (when she was in kindie) for picking on her friend because he has two mamas and therefore..he would grow up to have a boyfriend himself. She stood her ground and put them in her place.

It's moments like those and like the one you just described that make us proud of our kidlets. He sounds like a very smart child!
